According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, viruses like SARS-CoV-2 can cause brain cells to fuse, leading to chronic neurological symptoms.

The researchers noted that this can explain the mechanism behind the major COVID symptoms, such as brain fog, headaches, loss of taste and smell, and other long-term neurological symptoms experienced by patients months after their initial infection.

The study showed that COVID infection causes neurons to undergo a cell fusion process that has never been seen before. Professor Massimo Hilliard from the Queensland Brain Institute noted that after the neurons are infected by SARS-CoV-2, the spike S protein of the virus initiates neuronal fusion.

He explained that once the neurons fuse, they either start firing synchronously or they stop functioning altogether.
