In a study published in the journal Annals of Neurology, researchers have discovered unique networkconnections linked to visual and motor anosognosia and a shared network for awareness of thesedeficiencies.

Anosognosia is a condition in which a patient is completely unaware of a neurological or psychologicaldeficiency. Visual anosognosia, or Anton syndrome, is characterized by complete cortical blindness and theinability to detect vision loss.

The study examined the connection patterns of 267 lesion areas linked to vision loss, with and withoutawareness, or weakness (with and without consciousness). The researchers used lesion network mapping totest whether these lesion-induced abnormalities had an adverse impact on specific brain networks.

The researchers discovered that a unique network connection was linked with visual and motor anosognosiaand a shared network for awareness of these deficiencies.

They also noted that the shared network for awareness was associated with the hippocampus and precuneusregions of the brain, an area linked with memory. In contrast, the visual anosognosia network was definedby its connectivity to the brain's visual and metacognitive processing regions.
