According to a recent study conducted by researchers from PGI, Chandigarh, some generic medicines are ineffective in certain chronic diseases. The study published in Mycoses revealed that the likelihood of patients responding to generic drugs is significantly lower in some cases.

Currently, the Union Government has made it mandatory to prescribe generic drugs in the hospitals run by Central Government.

In the study, the researchers enrolled patients with chronic lung disease. They evaluated the effect of itraconazole capsule as the first line therapy for chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. They included 94 generic brands and 99 patented itraconazole drugs in the study.

The studys findings showed that 73% of the patients reported improvement after two weeks. In contrast, only 29% of patients given generic drugs responded to the treatment.
