Natural herbal compounds with antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties have gained attention for their potential in preventing and treating various skin conditions. 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), derived from licorice root, is a key active plant ingredient with valuable biological properties. It has been found to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, making it suitable for dermatological applications.

GA inhibits tyrosinase, reduces ultraviolet B-induced erythema and pigmentation, and promotes skin brightening through melanin dispersion and epidermis turnover acceleration. It is effective in treating atopic dermatitis, pruritus, acne vulgaris and sunburn-related issues. GA exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing pro-inflammatory genes and cytokines while displaying antioxidant properties and low toxicity to normal human cells.

Additionally, GA demonstrates significant antimicrobial activity against bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and can enhance the efficacy of certain antibiotics. Its versatility extends to cosmetic formulations where it can serve as a preservative and support the functions of active substances. GAs wide range of biological properties makes it a promising compound for dermatology and cosmetology.
