The number of Bone Marrow Transplants (BMTs) in Kolkata is increasing, and it is proving to be a blessing for patients suffering from illnesses such as leukemia, myeloma, and other blood and immune system disorders that impact the bone marrow.

A BMT is a technique that involves the injection of healthy blood stem cells to replace damaged bone marrow.

According to the Indian Society for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation, Bengal accounts for 8% to 10% of all BMTs performed in the country. Bengal has at least eight BMT centers.

The only government institutes with BMT units are NRS Medical College and the Institute of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine (IHTM) at Medical College Hospital. While the first has performed 94 such surgeries since 2009, the latter has completed 65 or more since 2016.

Onco surgeon Dr. Arnab Gupta, Medical Director, stated that Saroj Gupta Cancer Center Research Institute (SGCCRI) has a specialized BMT unit and ICU and a multidisciplinary staff of oncologists, cardiologists, and nurses. An adequate examination and follow-up are performed before the surgery to guarantee the best possible outcome.
