MAHARASHTRA: Due to an apparent increase in the incidence of heart attacks, the state public health administration intends to establish 19 Cath laboratories for heart disease treatment in several district hospitals.

The state has partnered with a private healthcare provider in the STEMI Project to teach physicians and nurses in public health institutions to perform ECGs on patients who come in with chest pain.

The data released by the state health department showed that patients diagnosed with a heart attack at public facilities are sent to public or private hospitals for free treatment under the state insurance program.

The data also showed that 4,329 individuals were eventually diagnosed with heart attacks and required additional care from the 5 lakh ECGs performed under the STEMI Project between 2021 and 2022.

The funding will come from an extra Rs 231 crore available with Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. A resolution passed by the government on May 24 noted that the funds should be spent to set up four radiotherapy units and 19 Cath labs in the state.
