The National Medical Commission (NMC) has confused over one lakh prospective undergraduate students of medicine with the withdrawal of the recently issued Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, for MBBS admissions.
The regulations, which included guidelines on competency-based medical education (CBME) curriculum, recruitment of research manpower, family adoption programs, admission of disabled students, and admission information submission formats, were issued on June 12.
However, in a recent circular, the NMC stated that the Guidelines for Undergraduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 had been withdrawn and canceled immediately.
The decision was made with the approval of the Competent Authority in the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB). This sudden withdrawal has left students and parents seeking clarification on various subjects, including the fate of the NMCs previous order, which required medical colleges and universities to complete MBBS admissions before August 30.
The NMC had also announced that the National Exit Test (NExT) exam, intended to replace NEET-PG, would be conducted in December and January each year.
In addition to the withdrawal, the NMC has now issued several other communications soliciting stakeholders feedback on competency-based medical education curriculum regulations, minimum standards for establishing new medical colleges, increasing seats in MBBS, and maintaining standards of medical education.
