New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to defer the National Exit Test (NExT) for final-year MBBS students of the 2019 batch. The National Exit Test (NExT) examination has been postponed until further notice by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, according to a public notice by the NMC dated July 11, 2023.

The NExT was intended to serve as a certifying examination to determine the eligibility of medical graduates to practice modern medicine in India. As per the gazette notification issued by the NMC, the NExT was planned to form the basis for granting licensure and registration for medical practice in India.

Once students cleared NExT Step 1, they would proceed to a one-year internship, and the same score from NExT Step 1 would be considered for admission to postgraduate courses. Following the internship, medical students were required to clear NExT Step 2 to become eligible for obtaining a license and registration to practice modern medicine in India.

The NMC clarified that the sample questions in the mock/practice test were intended to exemplify the pattern and format of the NExT Step 1 examination. AIIMS Delhi was entrusted with the job of conducting the mock test.

The government extended the time limit for the final-year MBBS students to take the NExT exam until September 2024, per the NMC Act. The Act mandated the commission to conduct afinal year undergraduate medical examination, NExT, within three years of its implementation in September 2020.
