On World Hepatitis Day, health experts in Patna warned people not to ignore symptoms like chronic fatigue, mild stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark stool, or jaundice, as these could be signs of hepatitis.
They highlighted the importance of early awareness and treatment that can prevent deaths related to hepatitis. Every year, World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28. The theme for this year is one liver, one life.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are 8,000 new cases of hepatitis reported globally every day. A study from WHO suggested that about 4.5 million premature deaths could be prevented in low and middle-income countries by 2030 through vaccination, diagnostic tests, medicines, and education campaigns.
In India, 40 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B, and 6 to 12 million have hepatitis C. Dr. Karan Bhargav, a consultant gastroenterologist at Jaya Prabha Medanta, emphasized that hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination. He urged parents to ensure their children receive the necessary vaccines. He also noted that hepatitis C can be cured with appropriate treatment.
He expressed concern that many people with hepatitis are unaware of their condition, as only 10% of hepatitis B cases and 20% of hepatitis C cases are diagnosed in India. Hence, he encouraged people to get thoroughly checked if they experience mild symptoms, have a family history of hepatitis or liver disease, or have related health issues.
