Association of myocardial infarction survivors with risk of vascular dementia

A nationwide population based cohort study published in the Circulation journal evaluated the risk of dementia in 1-year survivors of myocardial infarction. The results demonstrated that myocardial infarction was associated with higher risk of vascular dementia throughout the follow-up period of 35 years. Moreover, this relationship was remarkably stronger in patients who experienced stroke after myocardial infarction. On the other hand, the risk of Alzheimer disease and other dementias was not higher in patients with myocardial infarction.
