The clinical benefits of licorice (Glycyrrhiza spp.) have been a subject of investigation for numerous years. It has a historical application in treating various ailments. Diverse constituents exhibiting distinct characteristics have been isolated from Glycyrrhiza spp. extracts.
The objective of a review was to provide a comprehensive summary of the present understanding regarding the pharmacological effectiveness and safety of licorice extract components in addressing the underlying causes of acne vulgaris (AV) and the associated post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Licorice extract has been found to possess anti-androgenic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, depigmenting, and skin-regenerating properties. These attributes suggest that licorice extract may combat AV and PIH through various pharmacological mechanisms.
Licorice extract displays a wide-ranging spectrum of activity and holds potential as an effective and secure option for addressing AV and its related PIH. However, substantiated by evidence-based clinical trials, the efficacy and safety of licorice extract require validation. This review offers fresh insights that could guide further exploration in the context of extensive controlled clinical trials.
