The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that non-biology students will now be permitted to take the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate) examination. This decision contradicts the regulations set by the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI), which mandated a two-year study of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology in classes 11 and 12 for aspiring MBBS students.
Per a public notice issued on November 22, candidates who have completed their 10+2 or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English are eligible to appear in NEET-2024. Additionally, candidates with a background in physics, chemistry, mathematics, or computer science, along with other subjects, can also take NEET-UG without studying Biology/Biotechnology.
The NMC, considering the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) and aiming for greater flexibility in class 12 subject choices, framed the Graduate Medical Education Regulations-2023. This new approach allows candidates to study required subjects, including Biology/Biotechnology, as additional subjects after completing class 12 from recognized boards.
The decision will retrospectively affect candidates whose eligibility certificates were previously rejected based on the earlier regulations. However, critics, including Mr. Hanumantha Rao, CEO and Dean of a NEET Academy in Bengaluru, argued that the move would compromise the quality of medical education.
