Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, 28-year-old Dr. Nikhil Mamoria, a medical officer at Punes Sassoon General Hospital, has developed a revolutionary solution to address needlestick injuries (NSIs) among healthcare professionals. His patented creation, the SutureSure automated wound-closure device, is set to transform the landscape of medical suturing.
SutureSure features innovative suture cartridges and a needle-driving mechanism, promising to reduce NSIs and streamline the suturing process significantly. Dr. Mamoria, who conceptualized the device during the IIT Bombay-organized MEDHA hackathon in 2020, envisions empowering doctors to perform suturing effortlessly with just two clicks. The devices potential impact on enhancing speed and accuracy in high-stress environments is noteworthy.
The startup, De Novo Bio Innovations, founded by Dr. Mamoria, is currently conducting clinical studies for the prototype. Once validated, it aims to launch pan-India trials before making the device available in the market, a culmination of three years of dedicated development.
He emphasized that suturing needles, followed by syringe needles, are the most common causes of NSIs. Suturing, while a fundamental and effective method of wound closure, is also a barrier to adopting minimally invasive surgeries when using conventional instruments. He added that beyond addressing NSIs, De Novo Bio Innovations is committed to advancing wound closure and laparoscopy instruments.
