A study published in Revista de Gastroenterologia de Mexico assessed the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) in Mexican schoolchildren in accordance to the Rome III criteria. Here, 362 children and adolescents, with a mean age of 11.6±2.1 years, from public and private schools completed the Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms-Rome III Version (QPGS-III). The results revealed that among the schoolchildren who completed the QPGS-III, 27.3% met the criteria for a FGID according to the Rome III criteria. While functional constipation was the most common FGID (12.6%), irritable bowel syndrome (6.4%) was the most common FGID associated with abdominal pain. On the other hand, was no significant difference in the prevalence of FGIDs was observed between sexes. Hence, it was concluded that there existed a high prevalence of FGIDs among school-aged children and adolescents.
