The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced regulations to improve the quality of medical education by reducing the intake of MBBS students in newly established medical colleges. Under the Under Graduate Minimum Standards Regulations (UG-MSR) 2023, these colleges can admit a maximum of 150 students per batch, a move to address concerns about oversized class sizes hindering effective education and practical training.

Medical experts supported this initiative, noting the benefits of smaller batch sizes in facilitating personalized attention from faculty members and enhancing hands-on training opportunities for students. Improving faculty-to-student interaction and fostering a conducive learning environment will equip graduates for their medical careers.

The UG-MSR 2023 regulations provide flexibility for new medical colleges, allowing them to opt for lower student intake if specific criteria, such as the presence of a fully functional hospital and qualified faculty, are met. Additionally, the NMC has set a minimum requirement for MBBS seats per state, ensuring an adequate number of medical graduates to meet the populations healthcare needs.

Notably, these regulations only apply to new medical colleges established from the 2024-25 academic session onwards. Existing institutions with larger batch sizes are not mandated to reduce their intake. However, the NMCs emphasis on quality education may prompt them to reconsider their student-to-faculty ratio in the future.
