In a recent advisory, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has cautioned the medical community about circulating counterfeit disciplinary action letters targeting certain medical colleges and institutes.

The Commission revealed that a fraudulent letter purportedly issued under the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC was sent to a medical college in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The letter raised concerns about the institutions alleged presence of ghost faculty. Consequently, the NMC has initiated disciplinary proceedings in response to this matter, and it will be investigated further by law enforcement authorities, including the police and income tax department.

NMC officials emphasized that no such letter originated from the Commission, urging college authorities to be vigilant and not to fall prey to such deceptive correspondence. A statement issued by the NMC read that the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of NMC has learned that a counterfeit letter dated 03.02.2024, bearing the undersigneds signature, is being circulated on social media.

Hereby, they inform all stakeholders that UGMEB of NMC issued no such letter dated 03.02.2023. We advise all stakeholders, including Medical Colleges, to exercise caution and not to respond to any such fraudulent letter(s) unless received through the dedicated email of UGMEB, NMC, or by post from NMC. They added that all important communications, circulars, and public notices are published on the National Medical Commission website at www.nmc.org.in.

They urged everyone to verify the authenticity of notices, circulars, and letters through the NMC website. They added if there are any doubts, please seek clarification from NMCs UGMEB. The NMC will take legal action against those responsible for disseminating false information on social media.
