A global expert panel developed consensus recommendations on moisturization in holistic skincare acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and idiopathic sensitive skin syndrome, which are as follows:

  • Moisturizers play a vital role in the skincare routine by improving skin hydration and barrier function.
  • They alleviate skin dryness and irritation associated with topical acne therapy, thereby enhancing compliance and treatment outcomes.
  • Moisturizers are the cornerstone of the atopic dermatitis treatment.
  • Moisturization enhances skin barrier function, carries a steroid-sparing effect, reduces the incidence of flares, and expands the time between flares.
  • They should be used for all levels of atopic dermatitis severity, including primary prevention, maintenance, relapse prevention, and during acute flares.
  • For rosacea, moisturizers should contain humectant and occlusive agents to replenish epidermal lipids, retain moisture, and restore barrier function.
  • Therapeutic moisturizers are tailored to address specific symptoms associated with skin conditions (e.g., itch, inflammation).
  • It is advisable to apply moisturizers immediately after bathing, frequently and liberally, with at least 4 to 5 daily applications.
  • It is better to avoid moisturizers with fragrances; preservatives (e.g., formaldehyde) and tocopherol in patients with sensitive skin.
  • It is advisable to avoid anti-aging products with cell-stimulating ingredients and products containing astringents, toners, camphor, menthol, alcohol, or acetone in patients with rosacea.
  • An ideal/recommended moisturizer for atopic dermatitis patients should protect skin barrier function and may impart anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • Practice a patient-centric approach focusing on patient factors and preferences while choosing an appropriate moisturizer to ensure compliance.
  • Educate patients on the need for regular moisturization and provide practical tips on the appropriate use of moisturizers.
