Scientists at Umeå University have discovered that a type of bacteria in the human intestines called Blautia is essential for keeping a slimy layer in the human gut safe. When we dont eat enough fiber, like in a typical Western diet, this slimy layer can get hurt, making us more likely to get sick.
The study, published in Nature Communications, showed that Blautia bacteria help make more slime in the gut, keeping it healthy even when we dont eat enough fiber. They also discovered that certain kinds of fat, called short-chain fatty acids make this slime even better, explaining how the bacteria work.
The study included some healthy people who were asked to eat more fiber every day, like four apples or a small bowl of oatmeal. Then, the bacteria from these peoples guts were put into mice that were eating a low-fiber diet. They saw that the mice with the bacteria from the high-fiber group had a healthy, slimy layer while the others didnt.
This study shows how important fiber is for gut bacteria and keeping our slimy gut layer strong. Adding Blautia also made the mice less sick when exposed to a germ similar to one that makes people sick with E. coli.
