A new study from the University of Michigan revealed that 18% of teens who drink caffeine daily or almost every day do so to "stay awake." The study surveyed 1,095 parents in February, finding that 25% of parents reported their teen consumes caffeine every day or nearly every day.

Experts stated that their report suggested that parents may not always be aware of how much they should limit caffeine consumption for teens. Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the brain and nervous system, and excessive consumption can lead to various health issues in young people.

The study identified the most common sources of caffeine for teens as soda (73%), tea (32%), coffee (31%), and energy drinks (22%). Teens most frequently consume caffeine at home (81%), when dining out (43%), with friends (3%), and at school (25%).

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against caffeine intake for children and adolescents, and other experts recommend a limit of 100 milligrams per day for teens. The study noted that about 60% of parents know the risks of highly caffeinated products, but about half rarely check caffeine content when purchasing beverages for their teens.

Experts strongly advised that parents should take an active role in discussing the negative effects of excessive caffeine with their teens. They should also explore non-caffeinated alternatives at home, school, or with friends. Involving the teens healthcare provider can further empower parents to understand the risks of caffeine and find ways to reduce intake.
