“NMC announced the CBME Guidelines 2024 which are designed to improve medical education by integrating insights gained from five years of implementing CBME.”

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum Guidelines 2024, updating the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) first established in 1997.

The new guidelines for medical education aim to prioritize learners, patient needs, and global standards. They integrate subjects horizontally and vertically, shifting from general to specific competencies. The longitudinal program AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics, and Communication) focuses on ethical values, patient responsiveness, and communication skills. 

The curriculum sets national and institutional goals for Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs), to develop skilled professionals for various health issues and teamwork.

To qualify for professional exams, students must meet attendance requirements: 75% in theory classes, 80% in practical and clinical sessions, 75% in AETCOM, and 80% in family visits as part of the Family Adoption Program. For exams covering multiple subjects, a minimum of 75% attendance is required for each subject and its related branches, with at least 80% attendance necessary in practical and clinical sessions.

Internal assessments will be based on daily performance, including subjective and objective evaluations. Marks are distributed across phases, covering General Medicine, General Surgery, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Community Medicine, and Ophthalmology and ENT.

To pass, students must achieve a cumulative score of 50% in university exams, with at least 40% in both theory and practical sections individually.
