“A recent study suggested that raising vitamin B12 levels could help reduce testosterone deficiency in men with infertility, providing hope for better reproductive health through straightforward dietary adjustments.”

A study published in The Journal of Nutrition examined the effect of vitamin B12 levels on reproductive hormones in 303 men diagnosed with infertility.

It was observed that around 16% of couples in North America suffer from infertility, with a sharp decline in male fertility. Male infertility is characterized by poor sperm quality and low levels of testosterone.

Previous studies emphasized that decrease in testosterone levels were age independent and mostly lifestyle factors such as diet was a key player.

Diets high in fruits and vegetables and low in fats, meat, processed foods, and sugar improve sperm health. Vitamin B12, a nutrient, may enhance male reproductive function and potentially treat infertility. Traditional causes include genetics, hormone imbalances, and physical conditions, but recent research highlights the growing influence of lifestyle factors like smoking, diet, exposure to environmental toxins and sleep.

The study provided new insights into how specific nutrients, like vitamin B12, may affect hormone levels in men with infertility. The results showed a distinct association between higher vitamin B12 levels and increased testosterone levels. Men with moderate to high levels of vitamin B12 had a lower risk of testosterone deficiency than those with lower levels.

This suggests that even mild increases in vitamin B12 could help reduce the risk of low testosterone in men with infertility.

However, the study had limitations, including its cross-sectional design, reliance on self-reported data, and potential unidentified confounding factors. Future research should focus on examining the combined effects of multiple nutrients on male fertility and reproductive hormones.
