The NMC has updated its 2024 CBME guidelines, emphasizing inclusivity in areas like psychosexual disorders, gender identity, and clinical history-taking. Universities are urged to implement these changes in their medical education curriculum.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced important updates to the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines, 2024, following observations from the Madras High Court in the case S Sushma&Anrvs. the Commissioner of Police &Ors.
The NMC’s official notification includes several revisions to enhance inclusivity and relevance in medical training.Key updates include a revised title for Section 9 under Psychiatry, now focusing on "Psychosexual Disorders and Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression." In physiology, the competency of sex determination has been updated to include discussions on physiological alterations following gonad removal.
The Pediatrics section has also been revised to address adolescent sexuality and diversity in sexual orientation. Furthermore, the NMC emphasized the importance of clinical history-taking approaches that elicit gender and sexual orientation information in a non-judgmental manner.
The NMC has urged universities to implement these changes in their curricula.
