India is set to introduce a policy defining over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, enabling easier access to select medicines. A subcommittee’s recommendations, aimed at ensuring safe regulation, will soon be presented to the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.
India may soon release a list of prescription drugs eligible to transition into over-the-counter (OTC) status, making them accessible in general stores. A sub-committee formed to evaluate this shift is expected to submit its report shortly.
Dr. Anupam Prakash, chairman of the OTC subcommittee, highlighted ongoing deliberations and noted that they are exploring the best approach. Unlike countries like the US or the UK, India lacks a policy framework regulating OTC drug distribution despite the common availability of medicines like contraceptives and cold remedies.
The committee may propose amendments to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to address this gap while ensuring antibiotics are not misused. The report will be submitted to the Drugs Technical Advisory Board soon.
