The Supreme Court has ordered a special NEET counseling round to fill vacant medical seats, including converting unused NRI seats to the general category, emphasizing India’s doctor shortage. Admissions must be completed by December 30, 2024, through State Authorities only.
The Supreme Court has directed the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to conduct a special round of counseling to fill vacant medical seats for NEET undergraduate courses, citing India's severe shortage of doctors. Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan emphasized the importance of utilizing available seats and extended the deadline for admissions, ordering the process to be completed by December 30, 2024.
The court further ruled that vacant NRI seats should be converted to the general category and filled through State Admission Authorities. It clarified that admissions would only be made from the waitlisted candidates, and no college could admit students directly. This decision followed a plea for conducting a special counseling round after five rounds failed to fill all available seats.
