India has reported seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in children, with no mutations or surge in respiratory illnesses observed. Health officials advise preventive measures and increased awareness.
India has confirmed seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in children across Bengaluru, Nagpur, Tamil Nadu, and Ahmedabad. Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya, an epidemiologist, reassured the public and stated that HMPV, first identified in 2001, is similar to influenza and usually results in immunity after infection.
The virus is typically asymptomatic in adults, and there is no cause for panic unless a mutation occurs, which has not been observed.
The Union Health Secretary confirmed there is no surge in respiratory illnesses and urged states to bolster awareness and surveillance. Preventive measures include covering the mouth while coughing, handwashing, wearing masks, and seeking medical help if needed.
