Advanced SEEG surgery offers hope to epilepsy patients by identifying seizure triggers when standard scans fail, as seen in Mr. TusharSinghs successful treatment.
Epilepsy affects millions of Indians, causing sudden seizures due to abnormal brain activity. While medication controls seizures in most patients, nearly 30% do not respond to treatment. In such cases, surgery can be life-changing, but limited specialist expertise and awareness restrict its availability in India.
Doctors at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, recently performed an advanced brain surgery using stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) to help 21-year-old Mr. Tushar Singh, a salon professional who had suffered from weekly seizures since childhood. Standard brain scans, such as MRI and PET, failed to identify the cause, but SEEG, which involves placing fine electrodes inside the brain to track abnormal activity, pinpointed the seizure source.
Following minimally invasive surgery, Mr. Singh has been seizure-free for seven months. Experts emphasise that SEEG, available in select centres such as AIIMS Delhi and Amrita Hospitals, offers renewed hope for epilepsy patients who have exhausted other treatment options.
