“A study published in The Lancet HIV journal highlights the potential negative effects of substantial reductions in international funding for HIV prevention and treatment programs.”

A study published in The Lancet HIV highlighted the potential impact of major reductions in international funding for HIV prevention and treatment programs.

Researchers estimated that between 4.4 to 10.8 million new HIV infections and 770,000 to 2.9 million HIV-related deaths could occur between 2025 and 2030 if proposed funding cuts by the top five donor countries, including the U.S. and the UK, were not reversed.

The most affected populations were expected to be in sub-Saharan Africa, along with marginalized groups at higher risk of acquiring HIV.

Since 2015, international donors have contributed approximately 40% of all HIV funding in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, recent announcements from these countries indicated plans for significant cuts to foreign aid, leading to a projected 24% reduction in global international HIV funding by 2026.

Foreign aid programs, such as the U.S. Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), provided HIV treatment and prevention services, including funding for health clinics, testing, and laboratory services. These programs also supported broader health initiatives, such as strengthening healthcare systems, training healthcare workers, and integrating HIV services with other medical care.

However, the study acknowledged limitations, including uncertainties in future funding, unpredictable international aid reductions, and the potential for increased domestic financing.

Future research could help identify the most effective HIV prevention, testing, and treatment strategies to maximize impact.
