Kerala doctors demand a ban on unsafe home births after a womans death during delivery at home in Malappuram. The KGMOA calls such practices criminal and urges urgent government action.
Doctors in Kerala are calling for strict legislation to ban unscientific and unsafe home births following the death of a 35-year-old woman during childbirth at her rented house in Malappuram on April 5. The woman reportedly died due to excessive bleeding.
The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) condemned the incident, calling unsupervised home births a "criminal practice." In a public statement, the association highlighted Keralas achievements in reducing maternal and infant mortality through years of public health efforts.
While most of the states 3 lakh annual deliveries occur in hospitals, about 500 still happen at home, often driven by misinformation or blind faith. Health Minister Veena George warned against promoting home births and confirmed legal action in the Malappuram case.
