The Supreme Court has given the Union government three months to finalize food labeling regulations. FSSAI is working on implementing a star-based Indian Nutrition Rating system for packaged foods.
The Supreme Court has instructed the Union government to ensure that food products prominently display nutritional information on their packaging within three months. The ruling comes after a petition was filed by 3S and Our Health, a non-profit organization, advocating for front-of-pack nutritional labeling.
During the hearing, the Union government informed the court that it was already working on regulations to introduce this requirement. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which is responsible for regulating food safety standards, has been developing the Indian Nutrition Rating (INR) system. This star-based system aims to simplify the nutritional profile of packaged foods, helping consumers make informed choices. FSSAI had issued a draft notification in 2022, receiving over 14,000 public comments, and is now reviewing them with the help of an expert committee.
