The NMC will allow experienced government hospital specialists to join medical colleges as faculty to strengthen academic quality. Appointed doctors must complete mandatory teaching training to ensure educational standards.
To enhance faculty strength in medical colleges, the National Medical Commission (NMC) will now allow specialists from government hospitals to be appointed as faculty members. Under the proposed Teachers Eligibility and Qualifications (TEQ) Regulations, specialists with postgraduate medical degrees and at least two years of experience in 220+ bed government hospitals can become assistant professors, while those with 10+ years of experience can qualify as associate professors.
NMC chairman Dr BN Gangadhar clarified that the reform is not a stopgap measure to fill vacancies, but an effort to integrate experienced clinicians into academics. Appointed faculty must undergo training in medical education, ensuring standards are upheld. Appointments will begin after the official gazette notification.
