A new Omicron sub-variant, XFG, has been detected for the first time in Telangana, alongside LF.7.9 in other samples. Experts report mild symptoms so far, with no significant rise in hospitalisations or WHO alerts.
Telangana health officials have identified a new COVID-19 sub-variant, XFG, for the first time, according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). Out of five samples sent for genome sequencing, one male patients sample showed XFG, while four others revealed the LF.7.9 sub-variant. Both XFG and LF.7.9 are Omicron sub-lineages linked to the earlier JN.1 variant.
Telangana joins several states, including Maharashtra and Kerala, where XFG has been detected. Nationally, INSACOG has reported 172 XFG and 82 LF.7.9 cases. Experts say these variants cause mostly mild illness, with no WHO alerts issued yet.
With only nine active cases in Telangana, officials urge caution among vulnerable groups but stress there is no cause for panic.
