India has launched its first national registry for rare blood donors to help patients with uncommon blood types find matching donors. The initiative aims to improve access to timely blood transfusions for conditions like thalassemia and sickle cell disease.
For the first time, India has established a national database to assist patients with rare blood types. The registry, launched by the ICMRs National Institute of Immunohaematology (NIIH) in Mumbai, is designed to support individuals who struggle to find a matching blood donation, especially those with conditions such as thalassemia or sickle cell disease.
Efforts are being made to integrate this registry with e-Raktakosh, the governments existing blood portal, to facilitate easier donor searches. Experts say Indias demand for blood is high due to road accidents, major surgeries, and chronic blood disorders. Rare blood groups are difficult to find, often resulting in delays. This registry will help connect patients with suitable donors faster and improve the chances of timely treatment.
