The purpose of a new study published in the Middle East Journal of Digestive Diseases was to estimate the prevalence of chronic constipation and its associated factors in Pars cohort study (PCS). This cross-sectional study was conducted on the baseline data of the PCS. Overall, 9,264 subjects, 40-75 years of age, were recruited in the PCS. Diagnosis of chronic constipation was done using the Rome IV criteria. Among the participants, 8.1% were diagnosed with chronic constipation (9.3% females and 6.7% males). The findings showed that older age, physical activity, opium consumption, anxiety, depression, back pain or arthralgia, insomnia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease were associated with the prevalence of constipation in these patients. From the results, it was concluded that chronic constipation was a common problem in the PCS population. It was stated that decreasing risk factors associated with constipation, such as opium consumption and physical inactivity can reduce the prevalence of chronic constipation and decrease burden of the disease.
