A new study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice assessed the effect of chamomile odor on certain parameters of pregnancy. This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 130 primpara women. Women in the intervention group were subjected to aromatherapy with chamomile essence during the first-stage of labor. The control group did not receive aromatherapy. The duration, number and intensity of uterine contractions and level of satisfaction with the therapy post-delivery were recorded. It was observed that the duration of contractions and number of contractions were similar at all phases of labor in both the intervention and the control groups. On the other hand, during a dilatation of 5-7 cm, the intensity of contractions in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Moreover, the level of satisfaction with this therapy was significantly higher in the intervention group. Hence, it was concluded that aromatherapy using chamomile essence can decrease the intensity of uterine contractions during labor when a cervical dilatation of 5-7 cm is achieved. Additionally, women who receive this intervention report greater satisfaction with the therapy.
