A new article published in the Case Reports in Gastroenterology reported that chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is an uncommon disorder characterized by the presence of bowel dilatation and abnormal motility, and that, in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), CIPO is an important cause of chronic intestinal failure. It was stated that intestinal pseudo-obstruction is an infrequent reason for hospitalization in these patients, yet, it has been linked to high in-hospital mortality among SSc patients. The authors elaborated that patients with CIPO and SSc, present with signs and symptoms of mechanical bowel obstruction, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension, in the absence of an anatomical obstruction in their intestine. It was also acknowledged that despite more detailed understanding of this disorder, a majority of these patients continue to be treated with organ-based symptomatic therapy. However, they often experience a decreased quality of life and impaired function.
