A new article published in Global Pediatric Health discussed the relationship of fructose tolerance and the development of constipation. Here, the authors reported on the results of a literature review based on data on constipation and fructose ingestion, from PubMed. This entailed a retrospective chart review from the pediatric gastroenterology clinic, from January 2012 to December 2015, focusing on the relationship of fructose intolerance and its clinical presentations. Overall, 367 patients underwent the fructose breath hydrogen test (FBHT), of which 208 patients were found to have fructose intolerance. Clinical manifestations of patients with fructose intolerance included chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation, emesis, and nausea. Statistical analysis showed that chronic constipation, emesis, and nausea were less likely to be found in FBHT-positive patients. Hence, it was concluded that fructose intolerance may help resolve symptoms in patients with chronic functional constipation.
