A new study published in Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease evaluated self-reported travel-related health problems, antibiotic use, medical visits, and risk behaviors in immunocompromised travelers (ICTs). This was a questionnaire-based observational study, which enrolled subjects from a pre-travel clinic. Overall, 30 ICTs and 30 controls were included. It was found that more ICTs than controls reported travel-related health problems, antibiotic use, and medical visits, but the results were not statistically significant. Meanwhile, travelers’ diarrhea was more severe in ICTs. One ICT was hospitalized post-travel due to pneumonia. Among ICTs, 7% used on-demand antibiotics even though it was not indicated by protocol. Contrastingly, 20% did not use on-demand antibiotics despite indications according to the protocol. The results of this study reconfirmed the recommendation of on-demand antibiotics. It was concluded that usually, ICTs did not use on-demand antibiotics correctly. Therefore, careful instructions are necessary for this group of travelers.
