A new study published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences compared clinical sleep characteristics in patients presenting to a tertiary care gastroenterology clinic for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and celiac disease (CD). This study entailed the administration of validated sleep measures to consecutive patients who had been diagnosed with either IBS, IBD in clinical remission, CD or GERD. Healthy Controls (HCs) with no reported diagnosis of a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder or symptoms, formed another group. The eligible respondents who completed this survey comprised 161 patients with GI diagnoses and 41 HCs. The findings revealed that IBS patients had the highest frequency of poor sleep (72%), which was followed by CD (61%), GERD (60%), IBD (54%), and HC (39%). In addition, IBS patients also had the highest frequency of clinical insomnia (51%), followed by GERD (37%), CD (35%), IBD (27%), and HC (18%). Meanwhile, 40% of IBS patients reported taking sleep medications at least once per week, compared to 32% of GERD, 23% IBD, 13% CD patients, and 15% HCs. The results suggested that patients presenting to a tertiary care gastroenterology clinic report poorer sleep than healthy controls. It was stated that generally, patients with IBS report the highest rates of sleep difficulties compared to patients with other diagnoses.
