A new study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition aimed to evaluate parent-child agreement on health related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with functional constipation (FC) in primary care. This study enrolled 56 children diagnosed with FC, 8 to 17 years of age, and their parents. In these patients HRQoL was measured and parent-child agreement was examined. The findings revealed that parent-child agreement at a group level was good, with an Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) of 0.80 for the Defecation Disorder List (DDL), and 0.78 for the EuroQol-5-Dimension-Youth Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-5D-Y-VAS). On the other hand, mean discrepancy scores for the DDL and EQ-5D-Y-VAS were small, which suggested that parents were slightly more positive about the HRQoL than their children. Additionally, Bland-Altman plots showed marked discordance between individual parent-child pairs. The results indicated that despite good parent-child agreement on HRQoL of children with FC at group level, a substantial number of parent-child pairs differed on their rating of HRQoL of the child. Therefore, in order to ascertain the impact of FC on the HRQoL of a child, both the child and parent(s) should be enquired.
