A recent study published in the Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery aimed to examine treatment approaches for aortic coarctation in adults. This study assessed adults treated for aortic caorctation from 2000-2015. The primary end point was a composite of death, perioperative stroke, paraplegia, need for unplanned reoperation or occurrence of pseudoaneurysm during a mean follow-up of 82 ± 5 months. Among the patients assessed, 63 suffered either from a native coarctation, recurrent coarctation or aneurysmal complication. A majority of the patients having native coarctation and recurrent coarctation were treated with endovascular repairs; whereas, those with aneurysmal complications underwent surgery. It was concluded that a tailored management strategy needed to be reinforced for optimal results of aortic coarctation treatment in adults. Medical organizations offering such treatment should provide a multimodal approach which is planned based on patients’ characteristics and anatomic features.
