The purpose of a new study published in the Journal of Travel Medicine was to conduct a global survey of diagnosis and differentiation of cholera from other diarrheal diseases. This study entailed a search from PubMed and Ovid Medline for publications on cholera diagnosis from 2010 through 2017. The findings revealed increased Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) study publications for diarrheal disease and attempted test validations during the study period. Meanwhile, RDTs had varied selectivity and specificity, as well as associated costs and local resource requirements, which could prohibit their use. From the results, it was inferred that despite opportunities to employ RDTs with high selectivity and specificity in epidemic areas or in remote locations without access to health services, such tests are scarcely used. Therefore, the true global presence of Vibrio cholerae and its role in all cause diarrheal disease in underdeveloped countries and in travelers to these areas, remains uncertain. It was stated that wider applicability of RDTs may represent an opportunity in the wider management of traveler’s diarrhea.
