Based on a meta-review of physical activity interventions and their impact on health outcomes for people with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) has published new guidelines in European Psychiatry, October 1, 2018. The guideline suggests addition of a regime of structured exercise to standard medication and psychotherapy. As per the authors, exercise can effectively reduce mental health symptoms, improve cognition, and strengthen cardiovascular fitness among patients with depression and schizophrenia.
