A new study published in Journal of the Neurological Sciences investigated whether transient or continuous or recurrent restless legs syndrome (RLS), identified by a questionnaire, are associated with the premotor symptoms of Parkinsons disease (PD). This study included 16,636 men from the Health Professional Follow-Up Study who answered questions regarding RLS symptoms and had not been diagnosed with PD. Outcomes were self-reported constipation, possible REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD), and smell identification test score. The results showed that RLS was associated with increased odds of constipation, but only continuous or recurrent RLS status was associated with higher odds of having pRBD. Meanwhile, RLS was not significantly associated with olfactory scores. Therefore, moderate associations were found between the presence of RLS and increased odds of having constipation and pRBD.
