The purpose of a recent study published in the Expert Opinion on Drug Safety was to review the adverse effects associated with laxatives based on scientific evidence and to establish the safety profile of treatments used for constipation. It was noted that polyethylene glycol (PEG) is the only drug with a sufficient number of studies within the laxative group, the findings of which indicated that PEG is safe for use in the long term. The results of this review suggested that although all the drugs currently available for treatment of constipation are generally safe when used at defined doses under medical supervision, more extensive data on their long-term safety is essential since constipation is a chronic condition. It was recommended that long-term use of these drugs must be constantly monitored by healthcare professionals in order to attain optimal treatment outcomes on an individualized basis. It was further stated that this measure can be helpful in enhancing efficacy and minimizing adverse effects of various treatment modalities for constipation.
