A new study published in Clinical Radiology aimed to present the technique and the diagnostic accuracy of air test in detecting Hirschsprungs disease (HD). In this retrospective study, children hospitalized for chronic constipation (CC) between January 2012 and December 2016 who underwent an air test, were included. The test was conducted during contrast enema under fluoroscopic observation, in 179 children, in the age-range of 0-14 years. Positive test results were obtained in 150 patients. Of the 29 children with negative results, four were diagnosed with HD by rectal suction biopsy (RSB). Among the remaining 25 patients, RSB was conducted in seven; HD was excluded in all these cases. Meanwhile, in children with positive air test results, CC could be adequately controlled with conservative treatment. The sensitivity and specificity of air test were 100% (4/4) and 85.7% (150/175), respectively. Therefore, it was stated that air test can be used as a new non-invasive screening method for HD, when performed simultaneously with contrast enema.
