The data is scarce on the role of herbal and traditional medicine in pregnancy-related insomnia. There is some data on traditional Persian medicine that suggests that many plants could induce sleep and were used by pregnant women. Lactuca sativa L. is one such herb. A study published recently in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology assessed the effects of lettuce seed on pregnant women for the treatment of insomnia. This was a prospective randomized clinical trial that involved 100 pregnant women with insomnia, aged 20-45 years. The participants received capsules containing 1000 mg of lettuce seed (n=50) or a placebo (n=50) daily for a period of two weeks. The main outcome was the quality of sleep, measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). There was a significantly greater improvement in the PSQI score in patients receiving lettuce seed as compared to those receiving placebo. Lettuce seed was found to decrease insomnia among pregnant women and this herb could be recommended as a safe natural remedy for the management of pregnancy-related insomnia.
