A systematic review published in the Journal of Pharmacopuncture aimed to analyze clinical trials in the field of prevention and treatment of nipple fissures and pain which occur due to breastfeeding. This review entailed a search of relevant literature from SID, Iran Medex, Magiran, PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and Science. The findings indicated that menthol and warm water compress as well as counseling for correct breastfeeding methods are effective treatments to prevent and treat nipple pain and fissures encountered by breastfeeding women. In addition, the application of herbal medications for the prevention and treatment of nipple fissures and pain caused by breastfeeding may have beneficial effects, such as ointments containing aloe vera or Portulaca olearacea.
