A study published in Medical Science Monitor explored the high-risk factors for suppurative mastitis (SM) among women who were breastfeeding. Overall, 262 non-SM patients and 63 SM patients admitted to a hospital were retrospectively enrolled in the study. The high-risk factors for SM during breastfeeding were determined by assessing admission time after acute mastitis, galactostasis, primipara or pluripara, nipple injuries, antibiotic treatment course, and diabetes. The incidence of SM was significantly higher in patients with admission time >72 h after occurrence of acute mastitis as compared to patients whose admission time was <72 h. Patients with galactostasis had higher odds of developing SM compared to patients without galactostasis, and the incidence of SM was also significantly higher in primiparous patients than in pluriparous patients. The incidence was found to be significantly higher in patients with diabetes than in those without diabetes. Patients with nipple injuries had a higher likelihood of having SM, relative to patients without nipple injuries. However, no significant difference in the incidence of SM could be seen according to the antibiotic treatment course. SM during breastfeeding was thus noted to have a close association with admission time after the occurrence of acute mastitis, galactostasis, primipara, diabetes, and nipple injuries.
