The goal of a recent study published in The American Surgeon was to review the experience of robotic rectopexy - minimally invasive treatment of rectal prolapse, at a single institution. This was a retrospective review wherein information on pediatric robotic rectopexy experience was obtained from chart review of both operative notes and clinic visits between 2012 and 2015. Overall, 4 pediatric patients underwent a robotic rectopexy for rectal prolapse during the study period. Patients belonged to the age-range of 13-17 years; three were males and one was a female. It was noted that two patients had rectal prolapse with chronic constipation; one child had rectal prolapse from Ehlers Danlos syndrome; and another after an imperforate anus repair during infancy. Three patients received a bowel preparation. Three patients underwent robotic procedure, and one patient required conversion to an open procedure. The average postoperative length of stay was 3.25 days. No episode of recurrent prolapse was recorded. Two patients had improvement in constipation, one had no improvement, and another had no documented change. In addition, on short-term follow-up, there was no recurrence of prolapse. From the results, it was concluded that robotic rectopexy provided a safe, reliable, and short-term resolution of rectal prolapse in pediatric patients.
