A new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases examined the associations of Mycoplasma genitalium with selected sexually transmitted infections (STIs), demographic, behavioral, and clinical factors among women attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic. This study recruited 400 women aged >18 years. Sociodemographic data, sexual behavior, STI, obstetric and gynecologic history, along with urine, vaginal, endo-cervical, and rectal specimens were recorded. Specimens were tested for M. genitalium, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma spp., and yeast. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was diagnosed by Nugent score, and cervicitis was defined as ≥30 polymorphonuclear leukocytes per high power microscopic field. The findings indicated that M. genitalium was independently and significantly associated with age under 25 years and with multiple (≥2) sexual partners during the last 12 months. Meanwhile, N. gonorrhoeae, C. trachomatis, and T. vaginalis independently increased the odds of M. genitalium infection. Furthermore, controlling for other STIs and BV, a positive trend for M. genitalium to predict cervicitis was noted. Thus, in this study, M. genitalium displayed the clinical features of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae.
